Do Indians ‘need’ fairness creams even for their private parts?

Fair and Lovely, Fair and Handsome and now fair and lovely for your private parts…we are talking about a fairness cream for Indian vaginas!

“Ok this is the ultimate insult. Skin whitening for your vagina,” Rupa Subramanya, of The Wall Street Journal.

A glance through the matrimonial columns of any leading Indian daily reflects Indians’ obsession with being fair…and those hapless women who are ‘dark’ are termed “beautiful girl with wheatish complexion”.

Fairness products are regularly endorsed by film stars and celebrities in India despite protests from feminists that they promote insecurity and discrimination amongst women.

Advertisements for these products almost always show a woman seeking a man’s approval after having her skin lightened with the help of the products.

What is depressing is the fact that leading advertising agencies in the country are actually producing such despicable ads.

Here is the offending advert. You decide. Do Indian women need ‘whitening’ for their private parts?
