Did you know that one Indian farmer commits suicide every 30 minutes?
Farmers particularly cotton farmers have been committing suicide due to ineffective government help and low cotton price among many other factors. Recently a farmer committed suicide and left a hand written note blaming the government for not supporting the farmers. Further, he pleaded that people shouldn’t vote for the Congress for they had not done anything to assist the farmers in distress.
Never in the history of India has such desperate steps been taken by Indian farmers. It reflects the erosion of political ethics and morals, a disconnection between the government, the arrogant Indian middle class and the people who feed the nation.
Hundreds of thousands have died over the years.
When will this self imposed genocide continue?
When will the people in power understand that life, all life, is sacred?
When will the arrogant Indian middle class wake up to what is happening to their fellow citizens who help feed them?
On May 7th it will be Rabindranth Tagore’s 150th birthday, the Nobel Laurete who wrote...“Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high Where knowledge is free Where the world has not been broken up into fragments By narrow domestic walls Where words come out from the depth of truth Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit Where the mind is led forward by thee Into ever-widening thought and action Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.”
Sorry Mr. Tagore it didn’t happen. The country is still daydreaming!
