The Gilis have become a haven for single western women holidaying and looking for a romantic interlude that often morphs either into a shame marriage, a rip off (money changing hands for sexual services/companionship, and holiday sex under the influence of alcohol and drugs and reggae music.
Rent a rasta has been in vogue for all the wrong reasons. The matted tresses, the unkempt unwashed look (usually unwashed), smiling face with guitar in hand while sitting on a beautiful beach acts like an aphrodisiac for the Western women who arrive on the Gili islands – Trawangan, Air and Meno, searching for a quickie with paradise, a recharge for one’s emotional reservoir. All this translates into an unspoken social dysfunction; Sex, drugs and reggae.
The result: Western women being cheated, threatened/beaten, sex without protection, and death due to the rising rate of sexually transmitted diseases.
Today I received an urgent missive from a Western woman who has been privy to the sleazy under belly of Gili Trawangan informing me that her worst fears have been confirmed – that HIV and AIDS has reached the islands with the recent death of the lead singer, Pire(a Rasta) of the popular reggae band S2B of HIV. He was apparently last seen with a young Swiss girl just two months before he died of HIV. No one is talking, which is not unusual in these parts because people are afraid of being beaten or worse still knifed while walking the beach alone (apparently this happens).
“Pire is dead. He was in his early thirties. Married with two young kids. And a talented performer. But he had to screw around. That’s what they do these Rastas on Gili T. On one side they have their Indo family and children and on the other side they seduce the white women who throng the island for a bit of R & R. It’s all smiles and “I want to be your friend” shit, good reggae music, many joints and a bohemian lifestyle.
Pire man you had it all – kids, wife, a great band, brothers but yah you had to xxxx around and now you are dead bro. Was it worth it? The glory of bedding white women? The conquest? The fame of being a young stud on a very small island?
These rastas like us because we are white and have money. But there is no loyalty, respect, we are like dolls to them to be played with and then discarded like used unwashed underwear. These muslim brothers are in denial. It is sad that a young talented man is dead for all the wrong reasons. STD is rising on these islands but everybody seems to turn a blind eye to this horrible development. What’s wrong with these people? Who is watching? Who is listening? And will anything be done? Gosh, I am mad because no one wants to acknowledge the problem, no one wants to be tested (it’s all a macho man thingy). Please let the world know what is happening. Something drastic has to be done, now.”
